Default Hand Polishing

My question concerns the hand polishing of aluminum or magnesium wheels. (Not KMP bodies)
We all have our favorite polishes and that's not what I 'm after.
Can anyone tell me about the black build-
up that accumulates on the rag when APPLYING the polish.
Should it continue to be rubbed in or should the rag be changed to a clean section constantly? I know that removing polish always requires a clean section of rag.
Someone posted a great tip a while back about removal. Toilet paper. I've adapted that technique and love it . Works great.
Appreciate any techniques you care to share.
