Jerry: yes you have to shim the "stricker plate", I used washers. Try to keep the plate flat by different amount of washers. The carpeting will cover the washers so you won't see them. Also what I did was grind down some of the fiberglass to make sure it is flat and perpendicular to the latch mechanism. Then use more washers. Once you find the position and drill the holes you will see how thick the fiberglass is in that area so you know how much to grind.
