If anyone is interested I got the answer from Canton. Their thermostat is designed so that oil can alwys flow to the cooler. Because the cooler offers more resistance than the thermostat the majority of the oil flows through the thermostat back to the engine until it reaches temperature. At that time the thermostat will block oil from going straight back to the engine and force it to go through the cooler.
