Default crying in CT

Was able avoid the hassles of a total inspection, new vin # and the transformation of my 1983 car to a 2006 (composite requirements in the great state of Connecticut) by simply showing up at DMV with the previous out of state title and sales tax monies. For some reason they just gave me temporary plates for my ERA 427, however, they want to register the car as an 83 - which unfortunately means emissions.
Took the car down to my local shop for some pre-emissions tuning and then headed off for the local test center.
They ran it in a test mode first, then tinkered and tried to get her to pass. After a couple runs, the paint on the side of the car had bubbled due to the heat from the side pipes and no air passing over them to keep things cool.

For those of you in the tri-state area that heard that strange sound yesterday afternoon, it was just me screaming!!!

Now I have bubbled paint and a failed emissions slip.

Next time I go back, I am bringing two pieces of sheetrock to slip between the pipes and the body, but it is to little-to late.

Anybody know of any solutions to get through the sniffer?
