I believe that figure is based on the actual temp of the gas. I would be very surprised if a sidepipe got anywhere near that temperature.

Hmmmm.... Good point. You're probably right - and that's probably right at the exhaust port on the engine. Most of the heat obviously would be dispersed out the sidepipe and not be absorbed by the pipes.
