Ford/Edsel always seemed to make most sense because contemporary to the
FE was the rather unloved and forgotten MEL motor. The MEL (Mercury/Edsel/
Lincoln) appeared around the same time as the FE and was used in the higher
end Edsels, Mercurys, and Lincolns. MEL's soldiered on until the late 60's in
430/462 form powering the big Lincoln boats until the "385" series
supplanted both FE's and MEL's.
