Pat, you have to create or choose an "AVATAR" which is really a tiny jpeg or graphic file A good size is 75 pixels X 75 pixels or less than 19 KB or else the servers won't take it. You can use a graphics prigram like Photoshop to make one out of your favorite pic. make it as contrasty as possible.
Go to User CP in the top menu and go to "edit avatar" in the menu box to the left. It would be a good time to fill in your profile as well.
