Matt,

I won't say that finding a fully compliant SB100 car in Cal meeting your standards is unobtainable. But you will be in store for a long search at the mid $30's. SB100 cars do command a bit of a premium, due to the sometimes difficult manner in which the certificates are obtained. This is even more prevalent today, thus previously registered SB100 cars have an advantage and you are justified in seeking that. You could find a Superformance (early production number...100-500) for high $30's as they do show up every now and then. But that will be a car built in '98 or so and may not have many of the later refinements (dropped footwells, 4-wheel Wilwood discs, stainless/chrome roll bar, etc., etc.). Also be prepared to add a slight premium for BB cars, and even more a premium for professionally prepped BB engines (Keith Kraft, etc.).

I was in your shoes over two years ago and decided to bite the bullet and ante up another $10K. That put me in the market for a truly fine car, which is what I pursued and ultimately bought (and brought to So Cal).

I also firmly believe that, at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Guys that build their own and put quality parts and craftsmanship into their cars end up with a great end result as well, and end up arguably out near the amount of money that a slightly used Superformance would cost you.

Good luck in your search...and be patient for the right car.
