Have you actually checked the bore/stroke size of both blocks. The 72 is more likely to be a 390, remember most blocks have 352 cast on the front regardless of actual size. 390 started in 1961, so you might get a pleasant surprise!

If it's 1972 vintage, it would have to be a 390/2V although 1971 was the
last year for the 390/2V, a few might have gone into '72 models. The 352
was gone after the '66 model year. I think most 352 blocks were designated
B9AE.
