I run a fuel gauge sender in my fuel cell with no problem. As the fuel cell is filled with foam for safety, the sender probe is a long tube rather than a float used in ordinary fuel tanks. You also need to have a sender that is matched with your guage electrically (for example, 240 ohms empty, 33 ohms full).
