Losing the little buddy is hard, and I share your heart felt sadness and with you and many others here. For those who've never had a "great dog", its a unique connection that some people never have in life, and even with humans. When I put my last guy down, I was told my little buddy would last one to two months max, and he went on another 5 solid years with all the treatments. You can kind of see it in their eyes when they are ready to go, they sort of tell you, and it is by far the kindest thing that any of us could ever do for them to put them at peace when that time comes.
