Simon,

To kill torque which may possibly damage your trans, you need to lose compression, particularly at lower rpm. In your case you can do this by fitting cylinder heads with larger chambers and/or pistons with deeper/larger bowls. Also a camshaft with MORE duration/overlap will reduce the effective compression at lower rpm.

When reducing compression DO NOT increase the piston to head clearance by use of thicker gaskets or machining the squish band as this will make your engine more susceptible to detonation.

There is another method where you are required to be extremely careful with the use of the RH & LH pedals but other people tell me it has not proven reliable in the past!
