If you want a great driver, get a small block with a 5-speed. 327 gears.
No regrets. You can add dual 4 bl carbs and FE valve covers for "the look" if that is important. A 351 or a 5.0 roller cam w carb is a trouble-free setup that "looks right" under the hood, in my opinion.
If you want a "show car" or a purely "period correct" car, then FE w top loader.
