I'll repeat what I said earlier:

"...you have to consider the fact that these cars vibrate quite a bit and are exposed to more elements (heat, cold, moisture) with an open cockpit. It's a fairly harsh operating environment for any gauge, regardless of manufacturer."

Said another way, even an Autometer gauge is set-up for failure trying to operate in a tough situation. HOWEVER, Autometer does, without a doubt, make a better gauge and I'm sure at some point (when the next Smiths craps out) I'll take the plunge and spend 4 bills and replace them all with Autometer.
