The 427 SOHC engines that were built in 1964 and submitted to NASCAR and were rejected because Ford did not meet homologation rules. The 427 SOHC went on to be sold over the counter at dealer ships and became famous on the drag racing circuit. Ford in response to the Hemi’s success in NASCAR created the 429 boss to compete in NASCAR.
Bob Tasca, a car dealer and drag racer, took 427 SOHC heads and bolted them onto the 428 BOSS the 428 COBRA JET was born. Once Ford learned what he was doing they as a result created the Cobra Jet Family of engines, the 429 as well as 428. What made the 427SOHC heads so effective on the these other engines was the cross flow intake on one side and the smooth transition for flowing gases it helped draw in fresh air on one side and remove the gases on the other side. This made the other cars faster in take off and run better over the long haul.
The engines that were developed as a result were 427 Low Risers the 427 Medium Risers the 427 High Risers and the 427 Tunnel Port. The muscle car wars Lasted from the late fifties to the seventies there is a lot of technology and engineering that can be found on a lot of today’s car’s including some of the police cars that Ford built
. The 427 had a single cam over each head at a time when most motors were using a single cam. It used a six foot long timing chain to power the two cams . The other ideas that made it work so well was the way it burned fuel due to the location of the sparkplugs the flame burned more evenly over the whole stroke. As mentioned earlier the way it took in air and discharged it through the exhaust system made the engine run cooler and more efficient. This allowed it to make 616 HP @ 7500 RPMS with one or 658 HP with two 780 vac-sec.
The engines that are being used in today high performance cars that Ford makes get there engineering from the 427’s and some from the other high performance engines that
Ford made during the muscle car era of the sixties and early seventies. There is a new breed of engine that Ford s has been planning and designing to compete with the modern day Hemi that they have yet to give a name.
urrent hemi i think it is about time
