Yes, solid lifter need regular adjustment, about every 1K miles. In addition, they need to be replace every 15K miles or so. Cost is $350 or so in parts.
The main advantage of solid lifter is that you can have steeper cam lobes yielding more HP and turn higher RPM's. I can tell you first hand that a 7800RPM redline on a 9L motor is pretty thrilling.
Starts and idles like a Honda but runs like a scalded dog when prodded...
