The answer is an overwhelming resounding YES. The length of the input shaft on most any transmission you would use takes into account the thickness of the block plate. Omitting the plate could jam the pilot shaft too far into the pilot bearing. Plus, the block plate is a good aide to help keep dirt and other unwanted garbage out of the bellhousing and the clutch.
