Default sidepipe seal

I have headers that slip into my sidepipes. So far I have not been able to get them to seal properly. I have cleaned both sides of the pipes on the headers and the side pipes and used Permatex Ultra Copper in a quarter inch thick ring. I put the ring about one quater inch from where the headers bottom out slipping into the sidepipes (four into four pipes). I allowed the seal to set up for about 24 hours.

Is there a better application method? Should I be using a different product?
I am open for suggestions.

Thanks for the help in advance.
