I have gone through two of the Smith gauges, and finally went with an Autometer. When I went with the Autometer, I took the silver bezal off the autometer, painted the orange needle white, should have Dremeled off the tail of the needle to match the Smith gauge, put the chrome bezel off the Smith gauge on the Autometer, and forced the assy back in, as you noted. But now I have an Autometer gauge in there that can't be noted as "not orignal" on my original SPF
