I'm not a expert by any stretch, but I had reasonablely good luck with a Lakewood on a Corvette, but you may want to consider having a machine shop surface any new bellhousing so that you know you have a flat surface. In fact, the instructions from the manufacturer (Keisler in this case, because it was a 5-speed conversion kit) may have recommended it, but its been a long time. The surfacing didn't cost much and, assuming you know of a good machine shop, you ensure a flat surface.
