If there is a nearby OSH hardware store in your area, go to the tool section and look for the following:

432 UNIVERSAL THREAD GAUGE - THEXTON

Identifies - USS thread sizes, metric thread sizes, pipe thread sizes, bolt sizes, spark plug diameters, etc.

Several different size gauges are included in the packet - all made from soft aluminum so as to not damage threads on certain parts.

I used this handy tool quite a bit for determining size, thread pattern, etc. Sorry, can't remember the price, but was not that expensive as I recall.
