I bought my first lead hammer from one of the Good Guy shows. I trashed that one and just bought another 4lb replacable head hammer from Mc Masters. They ship thier stuff right out. They have great prices on stainless products( bolts, nuts, clamps, ect).
I have missed and hit my wheels with the lead hammer and it didn't leave any marks. Also, you should remove them with the lead hammer and reinstall them with the dead blow hammer.
