Stephen, I think the mistake many of us make is to try and make the newly painted coat perfect. What worked for me was to apply it really quickly and not worry about brush marks. It seemed to settle beautifully even on areas I thought were rat$hit.
Even if you do get some marks in the first coat they will settle with the second coat. Dont think you will get by with one heavy coat cuz it will run, but frankly, you've gotta apply a really heavy coat for it to run.
I found by the time I painted the suspension bits and pieces that I learned the knack to apply to larger areas like the chassis..
