I was heading the same direction as you, but local mechanics doing custom engines can get very expensive. I had a std. stroke long block assembly quoted to me for $7600 (yes, LONG block only!)---what I would pay from some of the builders for a complete, running, dyno's engine. Something to be said for guys that have built small Fords before, and/or churning them out in an assembly line. I'm sure some custom configurations are available from Keith Craft and Coast High Performance. Check with them first, before you start shelling out big bucks for a custom engine.
But, hey, if you've got the money to burn...
BTW, if you do a custom engine, go with someone like Gessford that KNOWs Fords.
