We don't use the T-56 here (yet). Though if we were I would likely use what Custom Cars has been doing and go with a hydraulic throwout bearing to be consistent with their installs.

I understand the problems with driver vs. passenger side pivots.

As for removal you should be able to remove the rear frame crossmember and tip things enough to get it out? On an earlier car that did not have the removable crossmember we removed a TKO500 and swapped in an AOD by removing the sidepipes and sliding the engine forward then tipping the whole assembly. Should be a similar procedure.
