If they are already severely scratched and corroding, you can't make the matter much worse. If you do nothing, the corrosion will spread, and you will end up getting them re-coated anyway. If you try a home remedy and it works - great. However, you might get lucky if one of the polishing tricks works. If not, you can still send them out to be re-coated. You really have nothing to loose if you give it a try. Sorry I don't have any first hand experience or tips to offer, but I'm sure others will step up and offer some.
