pmfranke - First of all, I don't necessarily know of a way to communicate how tight is too tight or not (easy boys). I do know I was trying to eliminate the squealing as well which resulted in the over tightening of the alternator belt. Common sense usually comes into play on these things and recognizing the you can actually apply excessive pressure on the front main bearing as a result of over-tightening the belt is important to understand.
BTW, my Grandmother lives down in Auburn - beautiful part of the country you'all are in. Take care.
One other thought, my FE had a double lower pulley/belt system which worked very well and added the extra insurance in the event that you "threw" the alternator belt you had the water pump on it's own short non-adjustable belt - worked great for what it's worth.
