Prior to welding, clean the header coating from around the area and drill a small hole (1/16" or so) at each end of the crack to prevent it from spreading. It's important that the crack actually ends in the hole, so be sure you have located the ends. This eliminates the stress risers at the ends of the crack and allows the welder to achieve full penetration at each end of the repair.
