John, I use and highly recommend a product called S100. It is available through most bike (motorcycle) shops and is unparallelled in it's abilities. I have used many products over the last 40 years and I have used this exclusively for about a decade. It is also known as Total Cycle Cleaner in some shops. It has abilities not even listed. I used it to clean an old BMW I was getting ready for a couple's anniversary and when I used it on the chrome it even eliminated the surface corrosion that was developing. I've used it to dissolve the gunk in carb bowls, it is bio-degradable and is safe on the skin. Oh...Did I say that I really like the stuff???
