Yes you can swap them without removing the calipers.There are two bolts with a spring bracket on each caliper that hold the handbrake mechanism to the caliper.I will not tell you that it is easy to do it with the rear end in the car ,but I have done more than once myself.The other way is to drop the complete rearend,it should'nt take you more than an hour to drop it out.It will be really easy to fix your brake problem then.Re-installing the rear end is also not as difficult as it looks.Support and lift the diff (complete rearend)with a floor jack 4 bolts on top of the diff,driveshaft and get the fulcrum shafts backed out of the forward mounts (just enough to clear) .Check all the little washers and grease seals on the fulcrum.Only two sets should fall out.
