I agree about the alignment. To get the old dowels out, I tapped a 1/4" threads into the dowel (I only put in 5 or 6 threads with care to stay far away from the block). I placed a bushing with the biggest wall thickenss I could find over the dowel. Then I put a nut on 1/4" bolt and threaded it into the dowel. The nut ended up on top of the bushing. Then with two wrenches, I turned the nut and held the bolt head and the dowel pulled out.


There are probably other better ways, but that is how I did it.
