With the spacers you prevent the carbs from absorbing the heat from the manifold. The carbs heat up the gasoline in the bowl which starts to boil and dumps raw gasoline into the throats. No good for starting nor for the rings.
I even made myself some washers from the same material to be put under the screw heads. The heat transfer is minimal. No more gasoline dripping onto the manifold and no more gasoline smell. It works !
I got the 10 mm thick spacers from Inglese.
I had to reduce their heights to 6mm though because I was having some clearance problems with the hood.
