Default Vacuum Advance and timing

My engine performs absolutely great without the Vacuum Advance plugged in to my Edelbrock 650 cfm street carb. I have a ACCEL 52204 magnetic distributor w/vacuum advance and MSD 6AL ignition. I got it timed, runs extremely stong, great idle, nice strong throttle response - I am very happy. Soon as I plug in the hose to the non-emmision controlled side of the carb. (read the manual) it has back-firing with just the opposite previously observed in performance, sputtering, weak response etc. What am I doing wrong and what would I be missing if just locked out the vacuum advance? Running it without it seems to be fine, but the screw in the hose thing is getting old. Decision making time...
