The reason that we got SolidWorks is that a lot of our customers use it. As for me, I have been in precision sheetmetal for 35+ years and SolidWorks has a great unfold feature for sheetmetal applications. If you draw the part correctly (and it is a sheetmetal part) then the end user can use your flat pattern to create the program for their punch presses or lasers. Hence less cost for the buyer because there programmer dosn't have to spend the time redrawing what you have already done. As far as your application. If you don't plan on having any sheetmetal parts built than any Cad package will work. You just need to find one that works for you.
