Sal the starter gear is OK, yet. The problem is that it only started the engine a few times and probably wouldn't show much wear.
I did buy a new starter from NAPA and will hook up a battery and see if it makes noise when starting the engine as it sits in the engine cradle. (Advice from a racing legend, and good friend Larry Burton.)
