You're not dreaming Bill. When I take home some shop race gas (with lead) for my 10.4:1 Sideoiler, the pipes turn dark tan, shutoff is clean and throttle response is very sharp-and I have a lot of duration and fair overlap.
However all our builds here are very responsive to throttle and idle because AED builds 870's and 1050's to our spec and our dyno guy will work the jets if he see's one with less than optimal A/F or slightly sluggish. They go out of here real snappy.
