The only real requirement is that the toys be new and clean. Having them in a plastic bag or a box(such as the original package box) just helps to ensure they are clean when we take them to the hospital. A clear plastic bag lets the hospital staff see what's inside. (ie: this is better than having a package come in wrapped and concealed. Don't gift wrap anything.) There are no other special requirements.
Other types of toys are also welcome. The lady at UCD Med says the kids love plah-doh for example.
