What is the difference between a Pony Car and a Muscle car?

I'll take a stab at this;
Pony car - So named because the car that started it all was the Ford Mustang in 1964 1/2. These are characterized by being a small car with 2 doors, 4 seats, long hood and short deck with performance aspirations.
Muscle car - Ostensibly started by the 1964 GTO it's characterized by being a mid-sized car with a more powerful full-sized car power train. Cars like it, the Chevelle big blocks, Torino big blocks and the like are what is normally considered a muscle car.
More recent, and more liberal, interpretations of these colloquialisms have resulted in many of the favorites listed in this thread. I.e. anything with a powerful motor being shown as a muscle car, including my own Boss 302
which is more like the quintessential pony car rather than a muscle car. Or the 427 Cobra which is more like the king of the sports cars. It's just that the word "muscle" is so what car guys are into that this probably happens.
Hope that helps, Steve (Pony car owner!)
