People I know that used 4.6 ltr quad cam motors used the ac voltage output from the altenator as a signal source for thier VDO tacho. Their auto electrician installed a wire in altenator before the rectifier diodes for the tacho.
This seemed to work for them and the altenator on the 5.4 ltr motor should be same so it should work.
