Yes there is a "kit". It's a steel plate that mounts to the side of the tailshaft. It has two sets of holes in it - one set attaches the plate to the tailshaft, the other set attaches the shifter to the plate. See this plate in the attached photo.

How long is your tailshaft? Are you sure you got the short version?
