A few old timers I knew used Risolene as well.

One big help with carb'ed engines is to disconnect the fuel and run the gas out of the bowls so you don't get varnish setteling in the metering circuits on long set-ups.

Since we're talking about oil anyone know why you shouldn't run motor oil refined from north eastern crude oil?

NE crude is parifin based, SW oil is asphalt based. I can't tell you how many gunked up Quacker state and Pissoil engines I saw get clogged topsides from this gunk. Never knew exactly why till a guy I met with Ring Power told me about their oil analisys program's findings.

I've always used a 50-50 mix of 50wt and STP engine oil treatment for engine assembly. Never run STP though, stuff's like snot.
