Herman: Chrome plating causes a phenomenon called hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen molecules in the steel cause weakness. Heat treatment (annealing) after the plating releases the bubbles, making the steel stronger. You don't have to worry about this with stuff you just want to add a little bling, but you don't want your roll bars to break just when you need them. I doubt if all chrome platers are aware of this.
