Saltshaker Jon any chance of talking you into a small hydro roller camshaft? KCR has a small one in the .550"-.570" They are all custom grinds. You have the right compression for them. If I can't talk you into a roller, the crane 501-533 is a great low end torque cam. I ran one for 5 years in a 452 motor. 368 hp and 448ft of torque with 9.2 compression and some mild head work. Car would run 12.5 at 108 in the 1/4 mile with a 3.31 rearend. Idle all day with a glass of water on the air cleaner and not lose a drop. I went up 1 size to the .533-563" hydro cam, little more power and a little lope in the motor. Stronger mid range. I went to a stroker 482 from Barry R. and the smaller hydro roller cam from crane the .587-.607" I have not had a chance to get the car on the dyno for the final tuneup but real numbers I am guessing is 470-480HP and 560-570ft of torque. I also have a KCR custom roller for my other motor,498 with a 633-633" lift. Hope to get this motor done over the summer.
Here's the thing, IMO and if you have a hydro lifter block and the problems with the changes of the motor
oil and needing additives, most motors of today are running roller lifters. I would tell you that this is the way to go, IMO. You didn't say what you where going to use the car for, cruising, shows, autocross, roadracing, sunday cruising??
. 1 more note, I retard my cams 6 degrees, there is a 4 degree built into the camshaft, this makes for torque in the lower rpms and only gives up a little HP in the top end. Chaplin just got his motor back with a roller cam, send a private e-mail and ask about how he likes it now. Rick L.
