This could cause a lot of grief I believe. I know that when I bought my car the CHP just used the VIN that had been assigned in another state. But I thought that to make the paper work complete the DMV did put a temp. VIN on it.
Which brings me to another question that was posted here a long time ago and never answered. What about a SB-100 car that is moved out of state by the owner when he transferred with his job, then a year or so later came back into Calif. I never did find out if they would accept the old SB-100 number or if he had to go through the process all over. I am not sure, but I believe he finally sold the car out of state but I don't know if that was because of the registration or he just got tired of the car and wanted something else.
