Everyone is different. Opinions vary. Wasteful to some, may not be wasteful to others. The costs to build a car can be a lot especially if you don't have the time or skill to finish them. As 4pipes states, and I agree, high quality parts and high quality work cost more. If you take your car to the track, then your car will cost even more for it to be properly setup. If you want a Weber-looking EFI setup from Thor, then add $10,000. You want a polish finish, then add $14,000.
I have never seen a completed running Kirkham sell for $65,000-$70,000. I think 004 (black with red stripes) sold for $60,000 on eBay and then later resold for $75,000. That's the cheapest that I've seen.
