Default Turn Signal/High Beam switch fell apart

The hi/lo beam switch on BDR 168 fell apart--the screw backed out and the switch came out of the stalk. I luckily found the little spring that goes with the switch which also came out . While the switch was out of the stalk I was able to change between hi and lo beam by pressing on the contacts, so the switch itself works. I put the switch back into the stalk (turn signal switch unit still mounted on the steering column) but now I can't change from lo to hi and vice versa. The little spring that pushes against the switch is a tricky devil and maybe I don't have it seated correctly? Is there a handy trick to ensure it is seated? Am I going to have to bite the bullet and remove the wheel/hub/switch to get proper access?

Any advice appreciated!
