That is what they are afraid of around here as some of those old mine tunnels were about ready to cave in as the bracing timbers were completely rotted away. One had caved in and we used to crawl over the rock pile to get to the other side so we could go deeper. Stupid, but it was fun. The way they blocked the entrances here is with concrete plugs about 10 feet thick. There has been talk the past year or so about maybe re-opening one or two of the mines but so far nothing has came of it.
They have been trying to clean up the run off from the Iron Mountain Mine for the past 5 years. I believe they said it has the most toxic water in the United States that comes out of it. You can see it from Redding and the whole mountain is red. Everything that water touches it kills.
