J Dean, youre way, way off mark there.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with being pc or not; as a general rule of thumb most of us 'Brits' are pretty reticent to shout how good we are (even when we are); thats just a cultural thing and has nothing to do with offending 'non-Brits' elsewhere; we just tend to view ostentatious displays of any sort as a little, (how can I put this); crass at worst and uncomfortably embarrassing and just a little low rent at best.
The (now lost) point in my original post was to say I wish we ('Brits') were a bit better at showing national pride like you guys are, and pride in our servicemen and women; its not that we arent proud, we just dont manage to shout it from the roof tops so well, and for me thats a shame.
As for going to holiday islands and displaying the union jack (usually on ill fitting swim wear or shorts !) that is the preserve of a tiny minority of fools; the vast majority of brits abroad blend in nicely, and a lot of us even speak other languages too ;-)
