The drill was just 1 example. I will say that my dad pretty much would let me use his tools as long as they were put back. I did not put the 9/16 wrench back in the right place one time and he said I could no longer borrow that wrench. Every time I needed a 9/16 wrench I had to use a crescent wrench. I learned quickly that I had to not only return it, but return it to the proper place. I was always working with him on cars and he knew I was curious and determined to get it right so he would give me jobs and not say anything unless I was about to do something so bad that it was not recoverable. When I was 12 he sent me outside to change the rear gears in his truck. That is where I learned how important the Shims were.
