Joe,

Good luck with the new trees. Digging in clay can be a pain. We have hard pan out here and in some places it is deep and others it is about 1" below the top of the ground. I used to have to drive one of the big concrete form nail through it and then fill the holes with water and let them soak for a while. You could then just put a post hole digger bar in and break out a big chunk. Even the back hoe they used to dig my underground power and other lines had problems when he hit it and they just had to hammer at it until they could break off a piece.

Hope that you get the other tree planted today and that they both do great.
